A few months back, we switched to AT&T U-Verse for TV, seemed like the perfect central DVR solution. I noticed shortly after wards that the internet connection on my Windows 7 (7100 build) would drop for a few seconds randomly. It was not a huge deal only happening once an hour and I suspected the beta version of Windows I was running had something to do with it as the Mac Book in the house was having no issues connected to the same router. But the problem started getting worse, to the point of dropping every few minutes and happening no matter what browser I was using or if I was connected via wired or wireless. The problem was very frustrating considering the other laptop on the network never had issues.
I spent more time than I care to admit researching, testing and tinkering with settings. I tweaked settings on Firefox, Internet Explorer and Chrome with no luck. Updated both my wired and wireless NIC drivers and still no love. Ran constant IP monitors to detect and log sags which proved to be fruitless. Searched for everything I could think of on Google and read countless forum threads of users complaining of similar issues, but could not pinpoint the exact problem. And having my research constantly interrupted by “Server not found” errors made me want to drop-kick my laptop into the street.
I stumbled across this page on another desperate search and tried updating the DNS settings on my wireless connection and so far, that has resolved the problem. At this point, I’m not sure if our gateway is dieing or it’s just Windows 7 build 7100 not handling DNS well. If it is a Windows 7 problem, it better be resolved in the release version.
